From Hillhurst to the coffee trade, Marino Cozzubbo built a life of family, flavor, and community.

Marino was born in Gaggi, Messina, Italy, and traveled by boat with his father Salvatore and brother Agatino, arriving at Ellis Island in 1906. After staying in New York, the family worked their way across Canada with the CPR, settling in Hillhurst in 1908. In 1916, Marino and Agatino began working for the Tuxedo Coffee and Spice Mill.

Marino married Emily Robinson in 1923, and they resided in Hillhurst at 1323 Bowness Road NW. Their daughter Lillian was born in 1924. Marino worked alongside Agatino for 40 years at Tuxedo Coffee and Spice Mills. Marino developed his own signature coffee blend, which eventually led to the creation of the Alberta Coffee Company. He ran the business until his retirement in 1964, when his son-in-law Frank Coulson continued it.

Marino and Emily hosted lively New Year’s parties and banquets, while Emily was involved in Lillian’s dance studies and studio. Marino enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, and, after retirement, fishing.

Emily (Tootsie) spent time with family, while Marino and Agatino (Joe) cherished time with Lillian.
